Italian Beef

Al's Italian Beef

Zagat
... the most authentic version [...] Stuffed with lots and lots of thin slices of roasted beef, it's then topped with giardiniera (pickled vegetables) and served on a long Italian roll.
Adam Richman's Best Sandwich
The bread, I don't think it even matters. Once you dunk it, [...] it soaks up all that flavor in the gravy... [...] Absolutely outstanding. It's rich, it's on the spicier side. It's not greasy at all, which is kind of remarkable. [...] It's a unique experience, nothing that translates anywhere else.
Man v. Food
...roasted beef, sliced and stewed in its own juices, fill this sandwich which is then immersed in those same juices... I taste the oregano, I taste all that garlic, the red peppers flakes... dipping the bread makes all the difference too [...] it just soaks up all that flavor...a 'pure meat' sandwich...
Serious Eats
Al's is Chicago's oldest and probably best known beef stand, but for some reason nobody else bothers trying to duplicate the flavor it gets from mystery seasonings like nutmeg and/or clove and/or cinnamon along with the traditional spices. The tender flavorful meat and classic giardiniera was enough for Nick and I to vote Al's #1...
Esquire
...thinly sliced beef on bread from the 122-year-old Gonella bakery, enhanced by giardiniera, a fermented vegetable relish made with hot peppers and celery.

Calling the roast beef tender is doing it a disservice. It's a gift from the heavens!!

Saw this reviewed on Serious Eats recently and it won #2 spot in the city for best sandwich. I can't believe it lost to Portillo's since this is so much better.

It's a toss up which I like better -- this or Portillo's. Hell, I'll just take both :)

Classically good sandwich. Just the perfect bread, nice juice and the spices are firey. Great job.
